The Eritrean (Catholic) Church

I just recently learned that back in January of this year, His Holiness Pope Francis instituted a new sui iuris Eastern Church in full communion with the Roman Church.  It is based in the African country Eritrea which is in the Horn of Africa.

The Eritrean Church celebrates Holy Mass or Divine Liturgy in the Alexandrian rite, but it also allows the faithful to celebrate Mass in the Ethiopic rite.  Its headquarters is in Asmara, Eritrea.  Its current archeparch or archbishop is Menghesteab Tesfamariam, M.C.C.J..  The Eritrean Church developed out of the Ethiopian (Catholic) Church.  Catholicism was reintroduced to Eritrea when Italy made Eritrea a colony under Benito Mussolini.  During this time Saint Joseph’s Cathedral was constructed in Asmara, Eritrea and in the Lombard Romasque style with a Gothic tower.  During this time Mass was celebrated in the Roman rite, thus under the Latin Church’s jurisdiction and it later was under the Ethiopian Church’s jurisdiction; now it is run by the Eritrean Church.

I congratulate them for their foundation and may God bless their ministry.
