Rick Santorum – A Rare Republican

Z9

The left likes to portray Republicans in general as extremely religious, orthodox Christians.  The reality is quite different.  Sen. Rick Santorum (R-PA) is a rare exception.  Not too long ago 300 Republicans — many being big names like Sen. Marco Rubio and former Mayor Rudy Giuliani — called upon the Supreme Court to legalize recognize same-sex “marriage”.  Here is an article:

He also strictly goes against abortion, euthanasia, embryonic stem cell research and other such moral evils.  Many other Republicans oppose these things but make some compromise such as the classic, “I’m against it, but I don’t want to push my opinions on others.”  He actually takes his Catholic faith seriously unlike many other Catholic politicians even in the GOP.  This is actually why Dr. Alan Keyes, Ph.D. left the GOP as he said, “It puts a lie to the label and puts me in a position where I must question my ability any longer to participate in a party that has departed from its own identity.”  He has since left the Republican Party for America’s Independent Party which strictly stands up for defending life against abortion, euthanasia and other things in addition to defending the traditional institution of marriage.  See here.

Like Santorum, Keyes is a devout Catholic.

Just today I found a recent article where four Republicans were asked the same question: are they or have they ever attended a gay wedding.  Of all four, Santorum was the only one to give a definite “no”.  Marco Rubio said he would.  Scott Walker said he has attended a gay wedding.  Ted Cruz refused to answer but his reason was understandable.  Here is the article.

My respect for Santorum is based on his being a devout Catholic who thinks and acts like one to the best of his abilities, much more than the average politician, not because he is a Republican.  In fact, he is one of those few Republicans I take seriously on faith and morals.  Am I saying he is perfect?  No.  I do not recall anybody in the Santorum base claiming he was perfect nor even the only option for the United States.  I think this largely has to do with the fanbase which is practicing Catholics and Evangelicals for the most part who realize no human being is perfect and God alone can fix all things.  Honestly, I cannot stand personality cults like the Barack Obama crowd (which has seemingly died out) or the Ron Paul crowd, the latter being very aggressive in attacking every other politician and never saying anything slightly critical of him (not to say all who voted for him are that way).  They all have their strengths and weaknesses, but social issues happen to be Santorum’s strong point.
