In memoriam: Msr. Luigi Padovese, requiescat in pace
His Holiness Pope Francis has recently replaced the late Msr. Luigi Padovese with Fr. Paolo Bizzetti as Apostolic Vicar to Anatolia, the eastern region of Turkey. For those who don’t know, Padovese was martyred for the Catholic faith five years ago.
It did not exactly make international news, and the mainstream media ignored it at least for the most part. Padovese was stabbed multiple times by his former driver, a 26-year-old man, who then beheaded him and shouted “Allahu Akbar” multiple times. No wonder this would be ignored. Only Muslims can be victims of persecution both in the hands of Christians and Muslims, or at least that’s the narrative the political correctness crowd wants you to think, and when they’re faced with the fact that’s wrong then they downplay the persecution of Christians in the hands of Muslims.
So, then there’s the motivation. According to police, Padovese’s killer claimed that Padovese was the devil incarnate according to a wahy or revelation he allegedly received from Allah and during his trial he loudly recited the adhan or Islamic incantation sung by a muezzin five times a day. It is clear this guy was yet another jihadist, lone wolf or not. But this has nothing to do with Islam! So the political correctness crowd says. The Islamic texts show otherwise: the Quran alone commands Muslims to behead their enemies at least twice.
“When your Lord revealed to the angels: I am with you, therefore make firm those who believe. I will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve. Therefore strike off their heads and strike off every fingertip of them.” (8:12 [Shakir])
“So when you meet in battle those who disbelieve, then smite the necks until when you have overcome them, . . .” (47:4 [Shakir])
The Holy Father does not seem to understand this as he seems inclined to believe that “Islam and the proper reading of the Koran are opposed to every form of violence” (cf. Evangelii Gaudium, n. 253). Actually the doctrine of abrogation in Islamic theology dictates that latter parts of the Quran abrogate those in the earlier parts: so the Medinan Quran, which is the more violent and intolerant part, supersedes the Meccan Quran which is the more peaceful and tolerant part. Furthermore, scholars from the Middle Ages up to now for the most part take these commands literally. Ibn Taymiyyah, Osama bin Laden’s favorite, or Ibn Kathir, Ibn Jalalayn, al-Tabari teach in favor of jihad or holy war against non-Muslims.
Rèquiem aetèrnam, dona eis, Domine, et lux perpètua lùceat eis. Requiéscant in pace. Amen.
