Rev. Pat Robertson and Pastor John Hagee
The televangelists are really popular these days and practically have celebrity status. They give motivational speeches, sermons and make great prayers and talk about opposing the wicked policies of liberalism, socialism and Islam for example. But are they telling you the whole truth?
They endlessly quote Scripture and come up with their own assumptions about what doomsday will look like and predictions of when it will occur, forgetting the words of Our Lord Jesus Christ: “It is not for you to know the times or seasons that the Father has established by his own authority” (Acts 1:7). They furthermore take Scripture out of context and make up a theology based on pretty much whatever suits you so long as you don’t compromise the moral teachings. They won’t talk to you about the Sacraments, especially the Eucharist and how it is the actual Body and Blood of Jesus Christ; they won’t talk to you about submission to the Roman Pontiff as the Vicar of Christ, the Magisterium which is the college of bishops with the Pontiff as its head, or the intercession of the angels and saints. But so much can be said and to sum it up they don’t do justice to Scripture and Tradition.
As I have mentioned earlier: the early Church was very clear and unanimous in its profession that Christ is truly present body, blood, soul and divinity in Holy Communion under the appearance of bread and wine. Saint Ignatius of Antioch for example said, “They abstain from the Eucharist and from prayer, because they confess not the Eucharist to be the flesh of our Saviour Jesus Christ” (To the Smyrnaeans 7:1). Saint Justin Martyr wrote that what we receive is not “common bread and common drink” but “is the flesh and blood of that Jesus who was made flesh” (First Apology 66:1). Saint Irenaeus of Lyons stated, “For as the bread, which is produced from the earth, when it receives the invocation of God, is no longer common bread” but “the bread over which thanks have been given is the body of their Lord, and the cup His blood” (Against Heresies 4:18:4-5). There are many more.
Even if they’re not overtly anti-Catholic, they deprive their listeners of the historical Christian truth of Scripture and Tradition. The Bible they use was put together by the Catholic Church and had seven more books. They know the Bible is the written word of God because we said it is. They celebrate Christmas and Easter the same days and times every year as we do and got these festivities from us. If you listen to the likes of Pat Robertson, John Hagee, Benny Hinn, Jimmy Swaggart, Joel Osteen, Jerry Fallwell, Joyce Meyer, Billy Graham or Jim Bakker, consider remaining in the Church if you are already Catholic, or join the Church if you have not, and listen to Catholic speakers like Venerable Fulton Sheen, Mother Angelica, Fr. Benedict Groeschel, Dr. Scott Hahn, or Fr. Mitch Pacwa. Read the Church Fathers and Doctors, Ecumenical Councils, Benedict XVI, Saint John Paul II, or Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. As the Lord Jesus said, “The truth shall set you free” (John 8:32).
In the end all this division among Christians only makes things more difficult in evangelizing the outside world. If all Christians were united under the pope, received the Sacraments and believed the doctrines of the Church, then we would be more powerful in being lights in the world.
